At
least that’s what the late Michael Jackson would sing, together with a host of
singers and songwriters committed to the cause of the poor, the needy and the
unfavoured: a tender, fund-raising song whose lyrics encouraged us all to try
and make this world a better place for you, and for me – for the entire human
race.
So
be it. Let this be a time of deeper consideration for all those who know that
they’d better do something to make up for handicaps of all kinds. We’ll begin
with Charlie – Charlie Gordon, the character in Daniel Keyes’s Flowers for Algernon. Enjoy reading and listening!

He gave me a chance with another card that had 2 kinds of
ink spilled on it red and blue.
He was very nice and talked slow like Miss Kinnian does and
he explaned it to me that it was a raw shok. He said pepul see things in
the ink. I said show me where. He said think. I told him I think a inkblot but
that wasnt rite eather. He said what does it remind you—pretend something. I
closd my eyes for a long time to pretend. I told him I pretned a fowntan pen
with ink leeking all over a table cloth. Then be got up and went out.
I dont think I passd the raw shok test.

Hello Eugenia.
ReplyDeleteI have read this short story and I have found several mistakes, I think, e.g. in the first sentence: "shud rite" and "evrey", although they are easy to recognise.
Otherwise, it seems that the writing and the listening are a little different, the writing is less extensive than the listening, are they?
Hi Fernando,
DeleteThat's right, there ARE mistakes - quite a lot of them. They are part of the story, and this is only the beginning. That's how Ken Kesey, the author, intended it to be.
But wait, there's more: there are still lots of mp3 audios to come with the text. And then there'll be the corresponding video for each series of installments.
The audio IS different, indeed - because this is not an audio book. They (I mean, the short story and the audio podcast) have been produced by different authors. And then again the videos are - well - different. But it should help, not hinder you.
The only thing for you and your colleagues to do is...to go on reading and listening! Hopefully they will all get the message: that the blog IS an extension of the class.
So, enjoy reading, listening and viewing!
I didn´t know this story. I've looked for something about it.
ReplyDeleteI feel like Charlie when expressing myself in English. I hope to keep improving it as him, but doing this type of exercises and not by other methods.
It's a funny story! It`s an imaginative story!
I'm sorry I have to disappoint you, Ana: again, this is only the beginning. Ther's a lot left to upload.
DeleteI'll do my best to upload two entries a week (it takes time to arrange it for technical reasons).
But it wouldn't be bad to have a look at the Rorshach Test, and post a comment for everybody to read!
When I said: "doing this type of exercises and not by other methods", I wanted to refer to the method used by Charlie, but I didn´t want to give more data. It's a joke.
DeleteOf course, I Know that is the beginning.
